As I’ve mentioned before, my 12yr old daughter, Caitlin, plays flute in her Middle School Band at Canyon Ridge Middle School. She’s quite the talent herself (top 7th grader in Symphonic Band, placed well in UT Band Camp, and is just plain awesome in so many ways), and her band just placed top honors in not only UIL but also the Directors Choice Music Festival this past weekend!
So in short, there were a total of five (5) awards they could possibly win. They won all five.
Not only did each band (Symphonic and Concert) achieve “Superior” ratings, which are the highest possible rating, they each also won “Outstanding Performance”, which is essentially first place out of all the competing bands. On top of that, the CRMS Band program itself, representing all bands from the school won Outstanding Program, which is first place out of all the competing Middle Schools.

In many ways, these accolades are not too surprising. The school’s band directors are incredible. Head Band Director Amy Allison has led the CRMS band to winning “Overall Outstanding Band” awards in 2004, 2005 and 2006.
Ah, to be a band geek again… We had the honor of being chaperones… yes, BAND PARENTS… for the trip, and boy did it bring back memories of band trips when I was in Middle and High School.
“This one time, in Band Camp…. “
