I think maybe the more sensible approach would be to jump on it, patent it, copyright it, and make it "mine," while waiting for someone else more technically-capable to make it better, market it, make people interested and then I slap him with lawsuits taking his money. And I should mention that Akismet requires obtaining a WordPress API Key and isn't totally painless of an install, but someone of your technical ability should have no problem with it.
