Recently I was shopping at Wal*Mart (it’s so much cheaper than HEB!) and for some reason I had a flashback to my childhood and all of a sudden remembered buttered toast w/Apple Butter on it and really really wanted to know if A) it was a real product or if I had imagined it and B) it was still available for purchase.

Much to my happiness, I found out that not only was it still around, but Wal*Mart, in its infinite consumer-related wisdom, carried it.  They’ve changed the jar from the last time I saw it back in the 70’s/80’s but it still shone out like a shaft of gold when all around is dark (quote, anyone?).

Now, if you haven’t ever had or heard of Apple Butter, let me try to describe.  It’s nothing like butter.  It’s nothing like apples.  It doesn’t even remotely taste buttery or appley.  I like apples ok enough, but it’s not like I’m crazy over apples like I am pears.  So I have no idea why it’s called what it’s called.  And frankly, I don’t care.

But man, if you get yourself some fresh-out-of-toaster toast, spread on some butter so it melts nice and good, and then put on the apple butter so it kind of melts and mixes in with the butter….. MMMMMMMM that’s some good toast.  And it has to be BAMA (don’t ask me why, I don’t even know if someone else makes it or not).

So my question for you - have you even heard of apple butter?

Just at your mom’s house. There is a new restaurant in our neck of the woods. Texas Roadhouse (I know, we have a small town) and I think they have apple butter for your rolls??? Never seen the Bama one or at the store. We have an HEB Pantry Store, so we probably wouldn’t. You get so excited about FOOD!!! Hilarious…

Oh yea, grew up on that stuff…along with frozen fish stick and jello with all kinds of crap in it. Man, you’re way over the top over this stuff. I may have to give it another chance next time I’m in the market.

I live in the Apple Capital of the World, and there’s fifty kinds of apple butter in local shops. I like it okay, but it’s easy to get tired of it.

“Apple Butter”?? Waddabout “Goober Grape”?! I got all twitterpated when I saw it in the local Fred’s not too long ago. Yummy. Peanut butter and grape jelly already mixed?! A lazy woman’s dream. ;o)

Dave2, I think that’s my goal. I just bought the big jar and I’m having it every day until I get sick of it.

Michelle, ooh, I remember the intertwined jars well. I thought they were the coolest idea, but then anytime *I* tried making a sandwich with it, I realized that it was hard to spread. I think it’s because I kept it in the fridge and chilled peanut butter isn’t very spreadable. Ruined more than my fare share (haha, get it?) of bread slices.

Abs, good point. I hadn’t thought to check the expiration date, nor did I investigate the ethics of the canned goods dept of Wal*Mart.

My grandmother made the BEST apple butter. I miss it…and her.
