I've taken an upholstery class (for two summers) because a piece of furniture (nowhere near the size of your couch) was far too expensive to have done professionally. Upholstery is very difficult to do right & I didn't enjoy it at all (party because of the teacher & style of class). I think I'd have to agree with Avi and suggest you get a new couch. However, I dislike incurring debt as well and would probably set aside a bit of money every month until I had the complete sum to purchase it outright rather than buy first & pay later.

Definitely. Using a credit card to buy items, as long as you pay it off in full every month, only increases your creditworthiness. I don't know if these types of long-term plans are really considered under that type of credit, though.

Avi, I fully realize that my anti-zero-interest-plan bias was deeply rooted before auto billpay came along. I don't know what impact to credit doing this does, but I have heard that using credit is better for credit rating than not using.

Even though I had the capability to buy my TV outright, I used Best Buy's 3 years no interest plan, and set up my bank to send automatic minimal payments every month that would pay it off a month before the promotion expires. Why use my money when I can use theirs?

Avi, Why? because I'm committed to not incurring any more debt. I want to get to the point where I buy everything but real estate with cash and use my money instead of someone else's. I don't have the willpower to make the payments over 3yrs no interest :) And "batting" - THAT'S the name I was looking for!

Mr. Fab, very few (by humans)

Abs, I agree that upholstering is probably too highly skill- and tool-dependent. But the springs I think I can try, and the batting I can see if I can do.

Cinda, Good to see you again! Hurry up and get into Austin soon. In fact, re-join our pool team. Quick. Hurry.

I hate to break it to you, but buying a new couch is better than trying to fix all of those things. I agree with the others, you should get a cover instead of reuphostering. Why too expensive for that old of a couch. You can get filler at any fabric store. As for the springs, depends on how bad they are. I put a board under the cushions of my couch when it got old and the springs got bad. With good cushions you couldn't tell it was there but mine wasn't a pull out bed. Keep us posted on what you decide. Give Kristy a BIG HUGE for me. Miss you guys.

I'm with Avi on the fluffiness. I also don't recommend trying to reupholster (geez, how do you spell that?) yourself. You'll muck it up, and you will end up having to have a pro do it, and the couch isn't worth the cost.

About the springs, I couldn't say. I wouldn't even know where you should go to "get" spare couch parts.

But no no, bad boy, do not reupholster yourself.

Be honest. How many times has that couch been peed on?

Why not just get a new couch with one of those promo 3 years no interest things that every furniture company is running right now?

One thing you can do about the fabric is to get a cover for it. And for the fluffiness, you can buy batting at Michael's, and re-stuff the pillows and cushions.
