Welcome to The blog of whall

Hi, This is Wayne. This is my site, my stuff, my blog, blahblahblah. The site itself is powered by WordPress and the Scary Little theme. I thought it was cool, and I still do.

I got an invite recently from a technical vendor looking to get on my schedule, bribing me with Dinner and a Movie at our local Alamo Drafthouse Cinema to see the first-run Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the The Crystal Skull

indiana jones vendor-paid movie dinner

The bribe worked.  I’m going tonight and will listen to their speil and have a nice night with the spouse and actually see a movie the day it comes out.  When I asked the vendor if I could bring my wife and they said yes, I was ready to agree to give them some of my time.

I usually reserve seeing a premiere for those that are real important to me – like Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Matrix, etc.  There hasn’t been anything in the last few years that made me need to go see it on opening day.  Indiana Jones is something I’m very much looking forward to (who can’t hum the theme song and get all tingly?) but I wouldn’t otherwise battle the crowds to see it when it first comes out.  I can wait for a matinee for most movies.

Anyone familiar with Alamo Drafthouse knows it’s a great experience – theatre seating but with every other row taken out, and dinner tables put in front of you.  Waiters serve great drinks, appetizers and very very good food.  Good humor on the screen before the movies.

What movies have you NEEDED to see on opening day?

And lo, the people did comment thus:

Needed is a subjective term, all of a sudden. ;)

For my definition of needed: None.

That’s a great bribe. I wish some of our vendors would do that.

If I ever get down that way, I plan on checking out the Drafthouse. I’ve heard nothing but good things.

    Have fun!!!

I didn’t get dinner, but got a similar invite from our local vendor and HP for an Indy 4 screening next Thursday. Your opening night trumps it all. Plus dinner and drinks… can’t beat that.

I am so jealous, that sounds like a blast!

There’s no movie I have to see on opening night (which was actually last night for Indy, btw).

But there are movies where I take the whole office to go see on Friday morning. We’re doing that for Indy tomorrow, and we did it for Forgetting Sarah Marshall and will be doing it for Batman, too.

Dave2, oooh, good call. And now I might have to add Hancock starring Will Smith to the list after seeing the preview last night.

Poppy, Oh, I have all sorts of subjective terms. What bread do you knead? Which pervert have you kneed? How many Knights have you Nii’d?

ajooja, the invite did not specifically mention dinner but I was grateful that when I got there, EVERYTHING was free – the servers made it clear we could order anything we wanted, including alcohol. We tried a few new things based on that new intel.

martymankins, as vendor bribes go, this was not only decent but also innovative. Granted, their solutions are probably > $100K on average so it would make sense for them to go all out on the marketing.

    Raganator, it WAS a blast!

Avi, yeah, midnight is technically a zero hundred hours, not 2400 hours, so midnight last night is still today. But granted, you got a good 18 hour jump on me. go Avi! Perhaps I should have asked “opening weekend” vs “opening day” because that’s what I really meant.

Michelle, I can’t remember if I saw that movie opening weekend or not but I remember loving it, buying it, and seeing it several times.

sizzle, as I twittered last night, “indy jones movie was very good; shia labuffy the vampire slayer is one of the best actors in hollywood. but BEST part? hancock preview”

  11. Raganator says:

what did you try that was new at the Drafthouse? I have a hard time ordering food there now cause I’m usually disappointed with the same old things
    what was hancock about ?
