Hi, This is Wayne. This is my site, my stuff, my blog, blahblahblah. The site itself is powered by WordPress and the Scary Little theme. I thought it was cool, and I still do.

After leaving a comment on Dawg’s post about the Zack and Miri film, I realized I had the beginnings of a blog post.

I hear people blog/talk/comment about Kevin Smith this, Kevin Smith that, blahblahblah.  I knew he did some clerk thing, and I slightly remember something about Carrie Fisher being a nun or something with some Wayne-and-Garth-in-reverse wanna-be duo.  I’m definitely an idiot when the topic comes up and I can never add anything to the conversation other than “I’ve been told I look like him a little.”

I don’t know if that’s a compliment or not.

Anyway, I thought it high time that I invest a little quality time in learning something new.  So I have decided to watch one (1) Kevin Smith movie.

That’s where you come in — I want you to vote on which Kevin Smith movie I should waste my time with watch with objective curiosity.  Note that the poll below is not asking what YOUR favorite KS movie is; after all, this is about me, not you.

However, I am not a cold callous conservative that will leave you out in the street starving to death; once you vote for which movie *I* should see, you are enabled to leave a comment and tell me all about your favorite movie, what you liked about it, and how much better looking I am than Kevin Smith.  This is like me buying the homeless guy dinner once he gets done washing my car and complimenting my blackberry.  win-win!

Which Kevin Smith movie should be Wayne's first?

My favorite Smith film is Clerks II, and then Dogma. But I think you should start with Clerks.
Nice Blackberry, but I won’t wash your car. ;-)

Putting my adoration for Kevin Smith aside, “Chasing Amy” is one of my most favorite films… regardless of who made it. Granted, the sexually-charged subject matter and language may not be for the squeamish, but it’s a surprisingly touching and realistic take on romance and friendship. With almost a brutal edge to it. Five stars!

No need to wait for your review of the Blackberry Storm… here’s my review: “It’s no iPhone.”

  3. Hilly says:

I voted for Clerks because a.) I think you should start with the earliest movie and b.) it is Kevin Smith at his purest. I would recommend anything up to “Jay and SIlent Bob Strike Back” but beyond that, eh. I think I only liked “Zack & Miri” because of the company I was with, quite honestly.

  4. ajooja says:

I’m with Hilly. I think everyone should watch the Kevin Smith fims in order (skipping Jay & Bob Strike Back) — also remembering that Clerks was made in 1994 with little money.

Smith’s films are about the scripts. If you have to have action, or special effects, or fancy camera tricks, Smith is not for you.

  5. My favorite one is Dogma…First, Alan Rickman is in it, and he always makes a film better *especially cause he’s so dang sexy*. Second, it’s about Religion. It makes fun of the catholics, but at the same time one quote always sticks out for me that sums up the whole film:

“When are you people going to learn? It’s not about who’s right or wrong. No denomination’s nailed it yet, and they never will because they’re all too self-righteous to realize that it doesn’t matter what you have faith in, just that you have faith. Your hearts are in the right place, but your brains need to wake up.”

Plus, there’s a giant poop-monster! it really is funny. The cast was great, and so was the script. I watch that movie at least once a month.

  6. Avitable says:

Start with the movie that he made on his own with his own money, Clerks. It’s rough, the actors are complete novices, it’s profane, and it’s poorly edited, but it’s a diamond in the rough. If you don’t like it, don’t watch any more.

If you do like it, watch Clerks II. Then give Chasing Amy a shot, although I always fall asleep about halfway through it. Mallrats is basic fun, Dogma is funny but a bit heavy on the heresy for me, and Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back is plain stupid fun.

  7. jayr says:

Clerks… by far the best blend of raw humor and debauchery

    There’s a reason the Storm isn’t an iPhone – it’s better :)

  8. Ben says:

Voted for clerks also. Although I didn’t see the more recent movies; I got scared off by Dogma, which I sort of liked a little, but just felt too glib.

  9. marilyn says:

I don’t really know who Kevin Smith is and I’ve only seen one of those movies. I voted Other, thinking that my other would be, “I dunno,” but then I realized that other stands for some other movie. So feel free to chalk my vote up to one for some other movie, like the original Star Wars.

On the other hand, I care about blackberries as much as I do Kevin Smith. Unless we’re talking about the actual berries. I like those. I recommend those.

  10. Nobody™ says:

I vote for Clerks, even though I haven’t seen a lot of his other stuff. I really enjoyed that movie, I was flipping through channels on tv one night and ran across it. The dialogue grabbed me right away and I couldn’t stop watching, even though it was getting late I had to get up early the next morning. I enjoyed Clerks 2, but not as much as the first one.

  11. Amanda says:

okay I can deal with the fact that we differ in politics, but the fact that you’re not a kevin smith fan is taking it too far, man.

That being said, I voted for Dogma because I think it’s his smartest film, but I can see Hilly’s point as well, to watch them in order

  12. Sybil Law says:

Clerks. It’s the one that made people love him! Not suitable for Jaden, though, at all! It’s crude and the acting is just bad, but it’s funny as heck and awesome that he did it with so little money. Kinda like the American Dream, only raunchy. :)
And you are better looking than him by far, but he has millions. Hmmm… haha! :D

  13. Ren says:

    Dogma! Dogma! Dogma!

Alan Richman, Chris Rock, George Carlin, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and more. Hilarious (as long as you aren’t overly bothered by the extensive blasphemy).

  14. Allyson says:

I wish that I could say something original, but Avitable completely summed it up for you. Damn! I actually used to live in NJ, but he got the scoop on me.

  15. Faiqa says:

I voted for Dogma, if you can get past feeling like God’s going to strike you down for watching it, it’s one of my favorite films ever. And I can see the Kevin Smith resemblance, just a little…sans the pretentious hollywood high brow look.

    Faiqa´s last blog post..Great Expectations

  16. martymankins says:

Dogma is my all-time favorite of KS movies. Clerks is a really good, but rough movie to watch. Rough in that it’s very independent with some edges that have been known to cut people (not literally, but it sure seems that way with some people that I’ve asked how they liked it).

Dogma is very unapologetic when it comes to it’s subject matter, but it’s got a great cast, very well written script and it just flows nicely. I watch it a few times a year and enjoy it each and every time. “Rufus, the 13th apostle”.. that’s all I’m going to say.

  17. Evil Genius says:

I loved Clerks, but it’s a humor that is an acquired taste I think. Some people just don’t get it, and let’s face it, I’m still an immature adolescent at heart so maybe that makes it appeal more to the likes of me! But I would highly recommend Dogma. Funny, but with a great story behind it (if somewhat predictable). And you get the added bonus of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck…if you consider either of them a bonus, that is!!

    :-)

  18. kapgar says:

My personal favorite is Chasing Amy but that’s not really the best place to start with Kevin Smith. I think you have to go back to the beginning and see where it all started.

  19. Robin says:

Ok, I voted for Clerks because that is obviously the quintisential Smith film to see however I personally liked Chasing Amy better but that’s because to me Ben Affleck wooing a lesbian is seriously hot.

  20. Raganator says:

Clerks is by far his best. However, you have to be in the right frame of mind and not get scared off by adult language and actions. Also important to remember as someone else has said it was completed on less than a shoestring budget.

  21. Amber says:

    1) I voted for “Chasing Amy.” If you choose to watch it, I hope you like it as much as I did!

    2) You are absolutely 110% better-looking than stupid Kevin Smith.

    3) I want one of those new Blackberry Storm phones. I seen the commercial the other day for one and it made my LG Env, that I’ve loved since the day I got it, just pale in comparison. And then I seen your tweets about it, which ignited my desire for one even further. Now, I’m seriously contemplating shelling out full price for it as I’m not due for an upgrade for another year now! Thanks… (haha)

    Update to all:

The votes are in and Clerks clearly won, but the reasoning behind Dogma made it’s impact. It is for that reason that I…

well, let me tell it in a picture:

    :)

LeSombre, are you saying you’re homeless?

Dave2, fortunately, I’m already prepared for the sexually-charged subject matter and language. I’ve been practicing with Californication. (the series). and you’re right, it’s no iPhone, but as I point out in my review… it looks to have made a number of improvements (copy/paste, multiple apps running, Micro SD card, removable battery, IT control, etc) .

Hilly, funny how watching a movie with the right people can make a movie, and watching a great movie with horrible people can ruin it.

ajooja, I’m ok with no special effects, camera tricks, etc. For example, Primer is one of my favorite films. I think it was made for $7k.

Cissa Fireheart, ooh, I didn’t know Alan Rickman was in it! I’ve liked everything he’s been in.

Avi, but I like my heresy heavy.

jayr, heh, good point on the Storm!

Ben, glib is ok in my book

marilyn, I like your definition of “other” and “blackberries”.

    Nobody, point taken

Amanda, ha! but surely you can respect me trying to reach out! :)

Sybil Law, heh “not suitable for Jaden”

Ren, wow, that is a powerful cast.

Allyson, agreeing with Avi is original enough for me :)

Faiqa, you saying I don’t have that look?

martymankins, I will look out for Rufus.

Evil Genius, you’re an immature adolescent too?

    kapgar, well I chose Dogma.

Robin, I know this might offend you but I’m not so hot on Affleck.

Raganator, shoestring budget is good by me.

    Amber, awww, thanx

Tug, wow, thanx. I think I’m going to do something special for you because of how awesome you are. Shall I make a monument a la Blogography?

    Poppy, thank you.

sourpuss, Probably about a week. I have my three blockbuster movies already here so once we go through those, Dogma is the next one to ship.

  28. whall says:

    Update: DOGMA has shipped

  29. whall says:

Ok everyone, here’s my thought on DOGMA, the movie I chose to watch based on everyone’s recommendations.

    Summary: I loved it.

    Detail:

No, really. I loved it. thanx.

  30. Avitable says:

Good! Did you watch Clerks first?

  31. whall says:

Avi, nope. I think I have a copy of Clerks II that @Absurdist gave me once but I haven’t watched it yet. Should I watch it? Or do I need to see Clerks before Clerks II?

  32. Avitable says:

You have to see Clerks first. Without a doubt.

Avitable´s last blog post..All I wanted was to kill a few hookers

  33. Poppy says:

I second Avitable’s motion. Clerks II makes much less sense without the Clerks background. Actually, none of those movies make much sense without the Clerks foundation.
