Many Many MANY thanx go to Dave2 who wisely suggested that I do a LOLcat treatise for my 1001st post on whall.org. I mean, what says “I have run out of things to say after saying a thousand OTHER things” better than LOLcats?
More specifically – a LOLcat video. But not just any video. An animoto video. But not just any animoto video. An animoto video of LOLcats set to Steely Dan’s Donald Fagen’s Tomorrow’s Girls. (I wanted to use maximum apostrophes).
I had something else in mind for today’s post (specifically, complaining about postage prices and the difficulty of using usps.gov for online postage) but I think you’ll agree this is WAY better.
Also, as a side note, I’ve decided to give a gift to ALL of you. I have updated my blog’s theme to support threaded comments. This means you can reply to the post in general like you always have, or you can reply to a specific comment by clicking the “reply” button under said comment. Comments with replies will display in a nested fashion. I’m still testing, but give it a go and let me know what you think.

With the right modifications, it will be awesome.
I want 1) people to be able to subscribe to all comments or just replies to their comment.
2) people to be able to subscribe to just the author’s comments.
3) people to be able to adjust the display of the comments themselves. default to threaded, but if they like it linear, then they should be able to set that and it sticks.
4) the admin to be able to do a reply which does an email notification to the commenter
5) the admin to be able to reply to the “new comment” email notification and the reply to be parsed and added as a reply on the blog for that comment. That way you can do everything via email.
Maybe I’ll be doing some wordpress plugin work.
So far, the main thing I don’t like about it is that I read the comments via RSS and the threaded comments often assume context will be provided by the threaded display. (Like this one does.) Your replies in particularly used to reference the commenter and now do not. Makes it much more difficult to follow via feed.

I don’t really get the appeal of threaded comments but then again, I don’t understand most of this stuff anyway. You’ll have to clue me in on how to have non-threaded comments on here if it gets too annoying because, d’uh, you know I wouldn’t be able to figure it out for myself

Sheila – I like it a lot. Now that I’ve been using it a bit, there are some improvements I have in my head with regards to email notifications, but for the most part I like it better than before.
I would say my biggest “like” about it is that I don’t feel bad about doing one or two replies here and there. Before, when I’d reply “in batch” with one big comment containing multiple replies, I typically had to be at the computer. Now I can do replies with my blackberry, and just do however many I have time for.
What a perfect thing to have for your 1001st post! I just LOVE those darn cats!!
And the new threaded comments are cool too. I like being able to reply directly to anothers’ comment.
