[...] I never got around to writing a post about the Toyota Prius that I purchased last October. Perhaps I will do so eventually. Now, however, I am writing about a different sort of hybrid. Unfortunately, it’s probably a much less interesting type. It’s a hybrid laptop hard drive, which amounts to a normal laptop hard drive with a bit of SSD thrown in for performance advantages. Wow, I’m already bored with this topic just writing it, so if you want the details, have a look at what Wayne wrote about it earlier this year. [...]

Dude... I realize I'm still in the dinosaur world of dial-up, but it took your blog 30 minutes to show up on my screen.
Then it ate my first attempt at a comment...
AND my second.
Trying again...

Oh, no!
Is that Jurassic Park music I hear in the background?
Why is that goat suddenly missing?
Gaaaaahhhh!!!
It can't be!
Jeff Goldblum!

I just built a new computer and put in a 120 GB SSD drive that I'm using for the OS and all programs, and a 2 TB normal drive for file access. The speed increase has been tremendous and I loved how quickly Windows installed.

That is pretty sweet. I thought those hybrids may be a little better than a regular HD but those results look a lot better than just being a little better. I may have to pick one of these hybrids up because 120 GB just isn't enough anymore.

Good to know DITL's are on your mind (hearing a revised version of the Willie Nelson song).

As for the drive, it appears there are many discussions on this, with most reporting that the drive works great in a MacBook Pro with the SD24 firmware update.

Ren - yup, you got it. Both the size (4GB) and the persistence across boots is what gives it the boost. When some of the files needed to boot are kept in the flash, it helps a lot. What would be cool is a report of the SSD contents - is it file-based? byte-based?

Or what would be even better is if they employed de-dupe type storage with ASIC assist, so that it could represent even more data in flash than just the 4GB.

Absurdist - wow, I didn't even realize I didn't keep the colors consistent. I had thought I was doing ok in Excel re-ordering the groupings so they'd be in chronological order (ie, Login Screen first, then Show Desktop) but doncha know it, I forgot something.

dave2 -- I saw tons of forum postings about Macs having problems that PC/linux didn't have with this specific drive, and almost all of them said the SD24 firmware fixed all the known problems - was this not the case for you?

martymankins -- I just realized I failed to specify which drive is the "old" one - it's the Seagate Momentus 7200.3 250G (ST9250421ASG). RE: DITL: It's on my mind often, and I actually have some free time now to work on them so ... maybe.
