Welcome to The blog of whall

Come on in and stay a while… laugh a little. Maybe even think. Read more...

Hi, This is Wayne. This is my site, my stuff, my blog, blahblahblah. The site itself is powered by WordPress and the Scary Little theme. I thought it was cool, and I still do.

I know a number of bloggers do bullet fridays or bullet sundays, but I do Stuff You Don’t  Want To MISC

WordPress upgrade

I upgraded my blog to the latest released version of WordPress, 2.8.  The upgrade itself went fine (took about 1.5 minutes), but it appears most of the plugins I happen to use cause problems.

This may make my blog slightly more unreadable than normal.

Most of them cause my dashboard to not display everything that it should.  Take a look here at a before and after:

Some of the plugins make half the page disappear, like above, and others make the entire page disappear.  Even others cause the plugins page to completely fail with Internal Server error 500.

I’m hoping the plugin developers take note and update their plugins.

wHAIL

Last night brought a severe thunderstorm, tornados, hail and all to our area.  For most people, this is not too big of a deal, but in our case it’s a little harder to deal with.  For these reasons:

  1. My wife is still recovering from knee surgery and therefore only has one good leg to use.
  2. My daughter had an MRI Arthogram on her ankle/foot late yesterday afternoon and was on crutches from that procedure.
  3. We live in a double-wide, so high winds by any name usually bring a deep concern

Fortunately, we have nearby relatives in a “real” house, so that’s our place of refuge when events like this occur.  We even heard the tornado sirens in the neighborhood a couple of times.  Had I thought to move the family over about 10 minutes earlier than I did, I would have missed the sheets of rain and hail pelleting me as I moved them out of the house and into the car.

I was pretty thankful for the umbrella I used, which deflected most of the hail from hitting us in the heads.  Most.

We came back home around 1am after everything died down and we were certain we could move without angering the skies.

Trillian Astra

Not only did I upgrade WordPress, I also upgraded my Trillian multi-protocol chat client from Trillian Pro 3.0 to Trillian Astra.  Astra is the code name for trillian 4.0, and it’s been in Beta for 2+ years.  I’ve been on some form of IM for more than 10 years, so I’ve collected a number of accounts.  Trillian has had it’s issues in the past (for me, it’s usually be CPU-related) but has been a great sidekick for me while I go about my heroic duties in life.

So far, I’d say Astra has everything good that the old version had, and adds some very neat new features.

The interface is pretty slick, too:

sleestack-astra

Some of the new features it adds that I’m excited about is facebook updates and twitter.  I like that it integrates with Google Talk a little better than before as well.  It also seems faster than the old version.  I went ahead and upgraded my Trillian Pro status for $10 (gets some more features).  Seems more fitting for my Windows 7 system.

Tequila Mockingbird Con

Had such a great time in Santa Fe, NM and met some fantastic bloggers.  If you ever get a chance to go to a blog meet-up, do it.  It’s pretty neat having a virtual friendship with so many people online for a long time and then get to meet them in person.   I’m sure I’ll get something up here dedicated to the event in the form of pictures, video or possibly aromavision, so stay tuned.

Swine Flu

I’ve believed for a long time now that humanity is ripe for culling.  We’re overpopulated, lazy, gluttonous and atrophied.  Like the bubonic plague in the 1300’s and the Spanish Flu in early 20th century killing 50-100 million, nature is going to come wipe out some of us to remind us of our place and maybe kick-start us into a better way of living.

However, there is something we can do to stave off death.

We can fight back – Eat BBQ

Nature is laughing at our vegetarianism.

Pepsi Swag

I’m not above a little pimping for one of my friend’s blogs, especially if it helps me get another chance to win.  Hmm, wait a second, if people actually go visit and try to get their own chance, that actually REDUCES my chances to win, doesn’t it?

Maybe it’s worth it.  Maybe the Universe will see my only-slightly-greedy intent and think “hey, that’s an improvement! he’s usually a lot more selfish!”

It’s worth a try.  Go check out BlondeBlogger’s PEPSI Swag giveway.

Hello Wayneaholics, Cissa here from Heart of Fire!

I was lucky enough to beg for a chance and given permission be hand-picked by Wayne to be a guest poster this week, and I thought I would try to be similar to some of the other great bloggers who have graced this place and keep up with some Wayne-ish traditions, so you feel more comfortable while Wayne’s living it up in Reno/Tahoe!

See the title?  I came up with that….You see, My husband MISK, is a big deal on my blog.  I speak of him often…ok well..usually when I am mad at him for something, but…entirely not the point — I’m here for Wayne! So without further delay,  onto the MISK, I mean MISC. Stuff : Cissa Style!

Cissa is Hot!  FIREheart is My name afterall…

I have decided that this year, I am going to go up for the Hot Blogger Calendar.  But I’m no dummy.  I know from reading Variety and all the Hollywood trades research that in order to get votes to win something, you have to start Campaigning Early!  I mean look at the Presidential race — Some nominees start a whole 2 years before!

So this year I am starting before it’s even announced that votes are open.  Vote for Me for Hot Blogger 2010! What?  You still need proof of my hotness?  well check THESE babies out:

See what I mean? HOT!  Plus?  I have some Hot Friends who were in this year’s calendar. Hot by Association! I got this one in the bag, baby!

So next year when the polls open, remember me, Cissa Fireheart!

I know nothing about Tech stuff but WordPress 2.7.1 Is not Installed on My Blog!

I’d totally go into some techy talk, like Wayne does, but let’s face it — I’m just not that smart.  I mean, all I do all day is copy and paste HTML and insert a few links write detailed programming on websites.  But I have that nagging little reminder sitting on my WordPress dashboard every time I log into my blog, so I thought I’d mention it.

I totally want the upgrade, even if I have no clue what it does.  Since Wayne is all techy, and in fact, is so cool he hosts my blog, and does all my maintenance…HEY WAYNE!  UPGRADE WHEN YOU GET BACK, PLEASE??

The Best of LOL Office Cats

I work in an office all day and so I thought I would show you guys some of the LOL Cats I have on my cubicle.  To me, they are hilarious, and if you work for Corporate America, or even a small office, you will appreciate them…

Well that’s about it for me here, folks.  Hope you are surviving the week without Wayne, and maybe I helped in a small way by doing this post the way Wayne might have done it if he were me….

See you around, and Wayne?  Thanks for letting me guest-post. Hope you are winning big at the slots!

Windows 7 Beta

As I believe I’ve mentioned before but am too lazy to go find the link, I upgraded my primary work laptop to Windows 7 Beta, build 7000.  I’m still loving it.  The standard OS at the company I work for is still XP, so this kind of jump is like 1.21 gigaparsecs in a kessel Mr Fusion run.  I was on Vista for about a year before that, so I was mostly ready for the user interface changes.

windows-7-info2

First impression – FAST.  Second impression: WHOA THIS IS SO FAST.  Fourth impression: What happened to the third impression?  Wait, I know!  It must have gone by too fast.

Windows 7 performs faster, looks better, backs up great, is more intuitive, is more easily managed, has cooler tools built-in and crashes left often.  All of my drivers worked (except for a Canoscan Lide 60 scanner; still working on that).

I tried upgrading to the latest leaked version, 7057 but I encountered errors so I’ll wait a while to see if another one gets leaked.  What’s exciting about this is that typically, beta software is slower than the actual release because developers usually work on stability rather than performance.  So I expect the actual release to be even faster than the one I have loaded.

That’ll do, Microsoft.  That’ll do.

I’m totally blogging this

I’m a sucker and I can prove it.

You knew it was coming.  I joined facebook.

[GASP]

Given that I already have a non-trivial online presence with twitter and utterli, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised how fast I went from 1 to almost 100 “friends.”

I put friends in quotes because I don’t know yet how I want to handle facebook.  I’ve decided for now that

  • Family is “in”
  • Online friends are “in”
  • In-real-life friends are “in”
  • coworkers, unless they’re actual friends, are “out”

I still don’t know how I want to embrace facebook.  It sure can be a time sink if you let it.  It has way too much potential to interrupt work and “real” life.  I also don’t know if I want to muddy up close friends with semi-acquaintances.  I’m so new, I don’t even know if that’s an issue.

What about you?  Do you facebook?  Do you keep it private or open it up?

To answer that question, I use Utterli.  I speak my thoughts into my phone while commuting or walking the dogs, and YOU can listen in.  Maybe even reply!

Here are some of my more brilliant moments that you might want to check out.

Hey hey!  How ya doin?  REALLY?!??!  ME TOO!

Proud Papa

Once again, I get to brag about my amazing daughter.

This past weekend she participated in a Texas State thing called UIL Solo & Ensemble.  We’re in Region 26.

This is where a bunch of band students in a specific area (called a region) go and play for judges individually and/or with fellow band geeks.  They can choose to play Class 3 (easiest), Class 2 (harder) or Class 1 (hardest) piece for their grade level (High School).

Last I checked, High School is comprised of four grades, 9th through 12th.  Caitlin is in 9th grade.  Yeah, this little fact plays a role in the bragging.

So she chooses a Class 1 piece.  Did I mention that was the hardest level for High School?

Then, she plays it… get this…  memorized.  TWO PAGES of blank ink splattered all across the page like it was taped on the wall during the shooting of Dune, when Baron Vladimir Harkonnen gets his face treatments.

Eww.

The judge then assigns a rating of 5, 4, 3, 2 or 1 (Superior).  The highest rating is a first division or superior performance.  This represents an elite performance given by a student.

If you’re still wondering by now what she earned, you don’t know my writing very well.

She achieved a Superior Performance! And that also means she’s eligible to compete at the Texas State Solo & Ensemble Contest later in the school year!

She worked very hard on this and we’re so glad all that practice and effort paid off.

Wii Fit Blog Badges

Speaking of bragging…. I wonder why there aren’t Wii Fit Blog Badges yet.  When I lose a ton of weight in the near future, I want to brag about it.  But since I’m lazy, I want my blog to brag about it for me.

I uttered about this recently, but I also wanted to put something up on the blog about it.

If you notice over on the right, my sidebar shows off my Guitar Hero stats.  I have badges that show off how many Expert songs I’ve completed, my ranking, etc.

I wish Nintendo / Wii Fit folks had a similar system.  I envision online profiles, so that your progress (however you measure that) could be uploaded and turned into badges that could proudly show off one’s achievements.  Some might want to show off their Fit Credits, their scores on the balance games,  yoga games, and others might even want to display their weight and BMI.

I, for example, would dare to show off weight and BMI because as vain as I am, I know I’d work out harder to lower it.  I need humiliation to help motivate me.

Everyone, please join together and laugh at my obesity so that I may improve.

Best of LOLcats

hey HEY!  You’re lookin’ goooooooooood!

The Texas Fireball

I did not witness this directly, but as I was waiting outside of IHOP Sunday morning, another patron right next to me pointed up and yelled “Oh my God! a meteor!!!”

Of course, by the time I looked it was gone.

There are many theories on what it was – at first, people thought maybe it was part of the colliding satellites earlier in the week.  Others figured maybe just general space debris.  Then there’s always the tried-and-true “it was an asteroid, dur.”

I’m pretty sure it was the American Dollar, getting ready for the impending signing of the stimulus package.

The “move a body” award

It seems that I’ve won an award of some kind.

And.. the child…. mentioned… a check?

Friends help you move; GREAT BUDDIES help you move a body

Friends help you move; GREAT BUDDIES help you move a body

Now, I’m not the kind of person to flaunt my many awards in people’s faces.  That’s what a sidebar is for.   However, I will point out that the person who gave me this award… hmm, well, let’s just say – she received the award four times.  Not too shabbizzay.

You might be thinking… “well if she got the award four times, and she gave away the award to ten different bloggers, how important is this award anyway?”  If you actually asked that question out loud, you need to seek some help.  If you just thought it inside your pretty little head, let me tell you a little bit about me and princepessa.  We have helped each other move bodies, and don’t get on our bad sides, if you know what’s good for you.

My Utterz

You might not follow me on utterli.com.  You might not even notice the regular updates I do in the utterli sidebar, over there to your right.  You might not even know that in addition to subscribing to my blog in a feedreader and watching me in videos called DITLs, you can actually sit and listen to my voice from your computer or your phone.

Here are some of my more brilliant chronological entries.

There.  Feel free to join utterli and join in the conversation!  Sometimes in order to have a dialogue, you need more than one person.  Two heads are more numerous than one.

The Best of LOLcats

Anyone who reads Dave2 knows which camp he’s in.

Dat’s all I got.  Just the one.  There weren’t many this time around that I felt were up to par.

Let’s hear it for a trend!  Doing my Sunday weekly series on a Sunday.  Imagine that.  (Or Beat That! – I wish I could find the video for Beat That.)

Dryers

My Kenmore dryer stopped working this week.  Anyone got any self-improvement tips?

Actually, asking for help on this is probably not a great idea.  It’s not like YOU’RE likely to know anything about it.

If you MUST know, it clicks when I try to turn it on, but it does not turn.  I hear a buzz sometimes from it, like it’s trying to think about maybe turning possibly.  If I rotate the dial or open the door, another click (like the one it makes when it shuts off).

Still no DITL camera

My camera broke a few weeks ago, which has caused two specific issues:

  1. I’m unable to record new content for my DITL series
  2. Tigger’s growth spurt is going undocumented.

I’m a little anxious about the whole thing, but probably not an anxious as I’d be if I were without, say, my blackberry or laptop.  I haven’t really looked for a replacement, but I’m thinking of getting a used camera.  I want to spend < $100 because money doesn’t grow on trees.  Money is made out of cotton, and cotton grows on a bush, not a tree.

Sliders

Jaden, my 6yr old, loves to watch Sliders with me.  Remember Sliders?

I loved this series when it was actually on TV live, and I actually set my VCR to make sure I didn’t miss it.   Remember VCRs?

We’ve seen the first episode at least 5 times.  I guess Jaden thinks maybe the episode will change each time we watch it, like maybe it’ll put us in a completely different dimension or something.  Remember your first?

Best of LOLcats

Yay! A weekly series meant for Sunday, done on Sunday!

Free Harry Nicolaides

I rarely beg on the blog of whall.

A good blog friend of mine, Adam Daniel Mezei (also on utterli and twitter) brought this to my attention and I’m bringing it to yours.

Would you please sign this petition to ask for Harry Nicolaides to be freed from Thailand prison?

There’s an interesting (and outrageous) backstory to the whole deal, which I encourage you to listen to or read, but if you don’t have time to learn, please have time to sign.

Side note: If you’re on utterli, I also encourage you to follow Mr Adam (also known as ADM) mentioned above.  As the Eastern Europe’s Utterli Ambassador from Prague in Czech Republic (a Canadian transplant) who speaks a million and one languages, he imparts knowledge by proxy… all you have to do is listen to him regularly and you will get wiser about the world.

Shiny’s Plagiarism

If you don’t read Shiny’s Takeout (sound it out, you’ll get it), or haven’t visited it in a while, you should go check out his Plagiarism Week 2009.

I’ll go ahead and say this now and get it out.  He completely stole this idea from me.

But at least he called it Plagiarism Week.  I guess that’s his “out” so to speak.  His mimicry has been outstanding.  I tell you, this Shiny guy is really funny.  I still laugh out loud when I think about the time I read his political post.  It was the most brilliant thing I read that week.

He’s plagiarized some fantastic bloggers out there.

Stimulus

Although I said I’d steer clear from the politics on my blog, I’ll at least do one more bout of begging.  Call or email or fax your Senator to have him or her vote NO on the Stimulus plan!

You can go to congress.org, put in your zip code on the top right and find your elected officials.  Most Congressmen and women allow you to contact them directly online, so do it.

At least learn what all’s in this stimulus plan.  THEN tell your Senator what you think.  You don’t have to agree with me – if you think they should pass it, contact them and tell them.  But I think if you learn about the package, you’ll see more and more why passing it is a horrendous idea.

Best of LOLcats

Which is your favorite?

Mine is the “unsettling” one.

This used to be a Sunday thing, but this past year it’s been mostly a “whenever” thing. I’m going to try to put some structure back in.  Being late is also a common thread with me, so the structure I put back in is to be late this week by doing it on Monday.

Blog Strategy Rethink

I uttered recently how I think I’m going to drop the political posts from ye old personal blog of whall.

I know some people have stopped visiting here because we’re so incompatible from a political standpoint, and that bothers me.  A lot, actually.  I don’t feel like I’m hateful or even unfair in my writings, but for some, my viewpoint alone is enough to shun some of the readers.  And while I don’t want to be restricted in what I can write, I also don’t want to alienate people when it can be avoided easily enough.

It’s not just the dropped readers or the perceived backlash that’s having me take action, however.  Ceiling Cat knows that I’ve had my share of the poopooing of LOLcat presence here on the blog, and they’re not going anywhere anytime soon.

Part of is that when I start writing politically, it’s hard to stop.  When I get on a roll, I want to write, write, write.  If I didn’t have the forethought to stop myself, I’d have a run of posts all pointing out this travesty, that issue, blah blah blah and I’d be remembered as the blog that went to washington or something.

I don’t mind being known as “the Republican with LOLcats” or something whimsical like that, but I don’t want to be known as the “anti-Obama crazy LOLcat lady” and I don’t want people hating me.  At least not on whall.org.

So from this point forward, I’m not going to be doing any political-themed posts on this blog.  I will probably continue the political utterz, but that’s only an entry in the sidebar.  There is an outlet somewhere for me, I know and I’d rather people hate me there instead of here.

As some of the replies of my utter have pointed out, it’s about the goal of my blog.  The age-old question of “who do you blog for? yourself? or your readers?” rears it’s head.  I’m not one to just shut up because there’s a disagreement, but the goal of this particular blog is to be a fun place.  I don’t want it to be a political debate any more.  I don’t want to foster an argument.  At least, not here.

So I’m going to go find a home for my political writing elsewhere.  I’ll probably add a comment to this post with where I land.

Heroes

I decided to give the TV show Heroes a try, and have burned through the first four episodes.

The verdict?  My 14yr old daughter and I like it a lot.  The wife… eh, not so much.  The only minor problem now is finding times that the daughter and I can actually watch TV together.  Our schedules are pretty varied, and it’s not often that we can just sit and partake of the television.

We received the initial discs from Blockbuster Online (Disc 1 and Disc 2) and now I’m trying to decide if we want to get the rest via BB Online, just rent them at Blockbuster as some of the free ones we get when we return other discs, or if I should just watch the episodes online separate from my daughter, and we go our separate ways on this show.

My “favorite” character so far is the mind-reading cop.  However, my favorite power would be the time-space continuum one, manifested by Hiro.

If you watch, do you have a favorite character? (please, no spoilers!  I just started season one).

Best of LOLcats

What brings hoomans together and haz us singing 2geffer more than political differences?  LOLcats!  And because I haven’t included them in so long, I give an extra long dose!
