Welcome to The blog of whall

Come on in and stay a while… laugh a little. Maybe even think. Read more...

Hi, This is Wayne. This is my site, my stuff, my blog, blahblahblah. The site itself is powered by WordPress and the Scary Little theme. I thought it was cool, and I still do.

I haven’t done one of my Favorite Things posts in a while – harkening all the way back to my first “Favorite Thing” post about my Treasure Island Skull Mug.  And yes, it still controls my actions.

But today I want to talk about a videographicamusicalawesomitudiness.

Man, oh Man.  I’ve been an Animusic fan for years now.

If you’ve never seen Animusic, check out their website and watch some of the DVD clips.  In short, Animusic is A) great music, B) great graphics/animation, and C) a techie’s dream.  But you don’t have to be someone who appreciates “C” to like “A” and “B”.

What these guys (well, one guy at first) did was write some songs, then write some software that animates the music in a very special way.  The video is integrated with the music, such that the music controls the video and sometimes vice-versa.  And to be more technically precise, the video is rendered “to” the music afterwards, sometimes taking months.  Either way you slice it, however, the end result is a very visually appealing combination of music and graphics.

There are two Animusic DVD’s so far, and I can’t wait for the third.  I’m a member of the Animusic Newsletter, and keep getting hints at the 3rd one, and was a little bummed it wasn’t out by 2008’s Christmas season.  I’m pretty sure I saw a Congressional Budget Office hearing where they blamed Animusic for the poor economy – had they released the DVD last year, it would have stimulated the economy to the point where everyone is enthused and animated to work harder and give more to charity.  Alas, it was not to be.

My absolute favorite Animusic Video is Harmonic Voltage.  It expertly combines Pink Floyd (guitar solo) with Depeche Mode (synth base) with an expressive and emotional energy-wave pole-dancing rocker life-form.

This clip is the last (7th) on the first DVD.  Interestingly enough, my 2nd favorite Animusic video is the first clip from the second Animusic DVD, Starship Groove.

I guess it doesn’t hurt things that the guy behind all the Animusic awesomeness is a bearded/goateed guy… get this… named Wayne.  And they have an operations and shipping facility in Austin, TX.  I gotta meet this guy!

Smallest.  Piano.  Ever.

But what we need in this world is Animusic Hero.  THAT would be totally cool – rocking out on Guitar Hero to Animusic’s music.  Seeing as how Animusic’s music is already in digital (MIDI) form, I’d think it would be easier to Hero-fy than normal awesome songs.  I had it in my mind a couple years ago that I would go ahead and make some Custom Guitar Hero songs out of Animusic’s stuff but never got that much into it.

heh, I said “Hero-fy”.  And I’m even more addicted to Heroes than ever before.  We’re 12 episodes in I think.  “Stick the next DVD in!” is a commonly shouted phrase between my daughter and I.

On Tuesday, my daughter got a root canal.

Yeah, ouch.

However, she was A) coherent when she got home, B) only asked for some excedrin late at night and C) completely made my evening by watching six (6!) episodes of Heroes (Season One) with me.  We’re both completely taken with the show (the wife, not so much).

I should point out that she really gets annoyed when I predict certain things to happen.   And I must say, I’m pretty good at it.  But it’s the kind of annoyed that comes with an involuntary smile and a punch-to-the-shoulder-type-of-annoyance.  She complains but she loves it.  You know what I mean.

Anyhoo, our Hero-thon was interrupted by the weekly Puppy training class my daughter has been taking Tigger to.  She was up for homework (yay!) and Heroes (yay!) but not up for puppy training that week.

Now, I have to mention something.  My camera has been broken for a few weeks now and I haven’t spent the time or money to replace it.  That means a lack of DITL content and it also means I’m missing out on Tigger’s growth.  I mean, he’s at least TWICE that size now.

Let’s see if I can use my mad photoshopping skillz to re-create Tigger and age him a couple weeks to show how big he really is.

There.  That’s better.

Tuesday marked Tigger’s 4th week in the course, which meant graduation.  We received a certificate and everything!  In general during this initial course we learned such fantastic things as

  1. Come when called (our command is “here!”)
  2. Not biting while playing with humans
  3. Getting used to all sorts of humans – different races, different ages, different sizes.  And their hats.  Evidently it’s very important to introduce your puppy to wild oversized hats early in life.  Especially important in Texas.
  4. Not pull on leash so much during walk
  5. BONUS: shake hands (a “trick”)

We’re currently working on the bonus trick.  It’s deceptively easy to teach your dog how to “shake” and I can’t wait to show it off on an upcoming DITL.

Have I mentioned that my camera is broken?

This used to be a Sunday thing, but this past year it’s been mostly a “whenever” thing. I’m going to try to put some structure back in.  Being late is also a common thread with me, so the structure I put back in is to be late this week by doing it on Monday.

Blog Strategy Rethink

I uttered recently how I think I’m going to drop the political posts from ye old personal blog of whall.

I know some people have stopped visiting here because we’re so incompatible from a political standpoint, and that bothers me.  A lot, actually.  I don’t feel like I’m hateful or even unfair in my writings, but for some, my viewpoint alone is enough to shun some of the readers.  And while I don’t want to be restricted in what I can write, I also don’t want to alienate people when it can be avoided easily enough.

It’s not just the dropped readers or the perceived backlash that’s having me take action, however.  Ceiling Cat knows that I’ve had my share of the poopooing of LOLcat presence here on the blog, and they’re not going anywhere anytime soon.

Part of is that when I start writing politically, it’s hard to stop.  When I get on a roll, I want to write, write, write.  If I didn’t have the forethought to stop myself, I’d have a run of posts all pointing out this travesty, that issue, blah blah blah and I’d be remembered as the blog that went to washington or something.

I don’t mind being known as “the Republican with LOLcats” or something whimsical like that, but I don’t want to be known as the “anti-Obama crazy LOLcat lady” and I don’t want people hating me.  At least not on whall.org.

So from this point forward, I’m not going to be doing any political-themed posts on this blog.  I will probably continue the political utterz, but that’s only an entry in the sidebar.  There is an outlet somewhere for me, I know and I’d rather people hate me there instead of here.

As some of the replies of my utter have pointed out, it’s about the goal of my blog.  The age-old question of “who do you blog for? yourself? or your readers?” rears it’s head.  I’m not one to just shut up because there’s a disagreement, but the goal of this particular blog is to be a fun place.  I don’t want it to be a political debate any more.  I don’t want to foster an argument.  At least, not here.

So I’m going to go find a home for my political writing elsewhere.  I’ll probably add a comment to this post with where I land.

Heroes

I decided to give the TV show Heroes a try, and have burned through the first four episodes.

The verdict?  My 14yr old daughter and I like it a lot.  The wife… eh, not so much.  The only minor problem now is finding times that the daughter and I can actually watch TV together.  Our schedules are pretty varied, and it’s not often that we can just sit and partake of the television.

We received the initial discs from Blockbuster Online (Disc 1 and Disc 2) and now I’m trying to decide if we want to get the rest via BB Online, just rent them at Blockbuster as some of the free ones we get when we return other discs, or if I should just watch the episodes online separate from my daughter, and we go our separate ways on this show.

My “favorite” character so far is the mind-reading cop.  However, my favorite power would be the time-space continuum one, manifested by Hiro.

If you watch, do you have a favorite character? (please, no spoilers!  I just started season one).

Best of LOLcats

What brings hoomans together and haz us singing 2geffer more than political differences?  LOLcats!  And because I haven’t included them in so long, I give an extra long dose!
