I’ve seen a number of TTS (Text To Speech) tools on the internet that are fun to play with — you type in your text and some character voice says it for you. You get to experiment with phonetic variations of words to gain the best sounding result, or just be juvenile and put in ” is a big fat doody head, who picks his nose.” I mean, it’s really funny to hear some random virtual character say stuff like that. I even wrote a blog entry on it back in 8/05 and made up a conversation between several different virtual TTS characters and Daffy Duck. And of course, I was even able to make fun of Phillip Simpson (but then again, how hard is that? Not much of a challenge if you ask me).
The TTS tool I stumbled upon recently is a bit different. It has the same basic TTS feature of typing in a phrase, selecting a language and choosing a voice/personality, but this adds a “Character Driven Communication,” which is a fancy way of saying a visual representation of the chosen personality speaks the phrase to you. It even interacts with your mouse in that it looks around the “room” based on where you point your mouse.
I’m noticing that the “voices” are basically the same voices available at the AT&T Research Lab’s TTS Demo that I typically use. That site allows you to not only hear the words but also download an on-demand .wav file for later storage and manipulation. Oh, the manipulation….
